Here’s what we know so far about long-awaited Game of Thrones prequel

January 9th, 2019
The rumored prequel to HBO's smash hit Game of Thrones will take place thousands of years before the events of the original series—perhaps involving the Children of the Forest, the original inhabitants of Westeros.

HBO has unleashed a flood of casting news about a planned prequel to its hugely successful Game of Thrones series, which will air its final season later this year. Details are scarce, but the company confirmed the prequel will be set thousands of years before the events of the original series, fueling even more fan speculation about which aspects of George R.R. Martin's vast fictional universe will be featured.

We do get some strong hints from the official HBO website. The prequel "chronicles the world's descent from the Golden Age of Heroes into its darkest hour," HBO announced. "From the horrifying secrets of Westeros' history to the true origin of the White Walkers, the mysteries of the East to the Starks of legend, only one thing is for sure: It's not the story we think we know."

A Long Night?

The Age of Heroes in the Martinverse timeline coincides with two key mythical figures, Bran the Builder—a House Stark forebear famous for building the great Wall of Westeros (the one that came crashing down in the final moments of last season)—and Lann the Clever, a forefather of House Lannister. This is also right around the time of the infamous "Long Night" occasionally referenced on Game of Thrones, a winter that lasted a very long time, when mankind first waged war against the White Walkers, ultimately joining forces with the Children of the Forest to defeat them. Martin himself referred to the prequel as The Long Night, and while HBO has not confirmed it, it'll do for a working title.

New study gives some handy tips on how to survive on Game of Thrones

December 10th, 2018
How has Tyrion Lannister survived for so long? Being high born helps, being male doesn't. His willingness to switch his allegiance to Daenerys Targaryen likely tipped the balance.

Game of Thrones boasts one of the highest body counts on TV, knocking off even major characters in some very gruesome ways. Perhaps even more surprising is who still survives as we head into the final season. A new paper in the journal Injury Epidemiology offers some insights into the best strategies to ensure survival in the brutal world of Westeros.

(Some spoilers for first seven seasons below.)

This isn't the first time Game of Thrones has inspired a scientific paper. One 2016 study examined the Greyscale skin disease, while a 2017 study explored fight or flight responses of various characters on the show. And there was a lively discussion among chemists over what real poison was most similar to "The Strangler" used at the infamous Purple Wedding in season 4.

It has been a long wait for the final season of Game of Thrones, and sadly, the wait is not quite over yet. But HBO has thrown hungry fans a bone with a shiny new teaser trailer. There's no new footage from the upcoming episodes, but we do get one full minute featuring some of our favorite moments from seasons past.

(Some spoilers from prior seasons below.)

Game of Thrones is the HBO adaptation of George R.R. Martin's best-selling Song of Ice and Fire series of novels—for those of you who've been living under a rock since the show debuted in 2011 and turned into a bona fide global phenomenon. It's a ratings blockbuster for HBO that has won multiple Emmys and may be one of the most expensive TV series ever made, thanks to numerous film-quality battle scenes, CGI dragons, and a simply massive all-star cast of characters. Bonus: it's got a killer theme song and opening title sequence.

Oopss! HBO Itself Accidentally Leaked ‘Game of Thrones’ Season 7 Episode 6

August 16th, 2017

HBO doesn’t need hackers to leak its widely watched “Game of Thrones” episodes, as it is sufficient enough to leak them by its own.

In what seems to be a terrible blunder, HBO Spain appeared to have accidentally broadcast the next episode—Episode 6—of Game of Thrones season 7 five days before its official premiere.

And as expected, the GoT episode 6 quickly began circulating online.

HBO Offered Hackers $250,000 As Ransom to Prevent More Leaks

August 12th, 2017

Hackers who recently hacked into HBO network and stole scripts, shows, and employee information documents, have now provided an email in which the United States cable channel offered them $250,000.

The company offered the payment as a “bounty payment” reward in which companies reward white-hat hackers for discovering cyber security vulnerabilities in their computer networks.

Getting medieval: A military analysis of Game of Thrones’ Westeros War

August 10th, 2017

Warning: This post contains spoilers for the already aired episodes in season 7 of Game of Thrones.

With the seventh season of HBO’s Game of Thrones at its halfway point, Westeros is at war yet again. In the last two episodes (episodes 3 and 4), the forces aligned with Daenerys Targaryen and Cersei Lannister have met upon the fields (and seas) of battle at last. Things have not gone entirely according to plan for either side.

In fact things have gone so wrong, so fast that I thought it might be time to convene the Ars Technica Board of Fictional Military Historic Analysis—with its charter members, Jon Nichols and Steve Skaggs, two special operations professionals now in the private sector—in order to dive in on the biggest blunders and curious command decisions from both sides.
